The Competition and Consumer Authority (CCA) protects consumer interests against unfair business practices by, amongst other things, upholding consumer rights to quality goods and services.
The CCA achieves this by investigating unfair business disputes, often leading to resolution of discontentment by either mediation or formal adjudication at the Competition and Consumer Tribunal.
Most consumers have been losing huge amounts of money to some Drilling Companies that take deposits with the promise to drill boreholes. In the end, some companies do not drill the promised borehole often leaving consumers in a trail of debts and untold miseries.
In the recent case, Sky Drillers, a Borehole Drilling Company based in Sesung (Letlhakeng District) had taken deposits totalling P 335 500,77 from three different consumers. Sky Drillers failed to deliver the services as agreed.
The CCA investigated all the three matters and ensured that the matters were brought to the Competition and Consumer Tribunal for adjudication. The cases were heard on 27 August 2026, and judgment was delivered on 22 October 2026. The Tribunal ordered Sky Drillers to refund the three complainants in full, together with interest at 10% from the date of default.
These consumers like many others before them have been restored as they will recover the monies they would have otherwise lost. The message is clear, consumers have rights, and they must be respected. The time for businesses that take advantage of or unfairly treat consumers is way behind us.
