Product Recall: Koo Canned Vegetables, Hugo Baked Beans and Helderberg Peas

PRODUCT RECALL: KOO CANNED VEGETABLES, HUGO BAKED BEANS AND HELDERBERG PEAS

The Competition and Consumer Authority (CCA) has received a voluntary product recall communication from Tyger Brands, the manufacturers/distributors of canned vegetable products  (KOO canned  vegetables, Hugo baked beans and Helderberg Peas)  following a defect that was observed on some cans bearing the product codes below. The local distributor of the products (CA Sales) estimates the quantity of the products that are already in the Botswana market to be in the region of 60 000 units. These products are available in most of the local chain stores and general dealers.

The CCA, which is the primary consumer protection agency, is mandated by the Consumer Protection Act, 2018 which provides under section 15 (5)  that where the Authority discovers that a supplier is supplying unsafe goods which do not conform to the mandatory safety standards, the Authority is mandated to among other things recall such goods, disclose to the public any information that makes the goods unsafe or even direct the supplier to replace the goods or refund any consumer who bought the unsafe goods or compensate the consumer for any damage suffered by the consumer in using the unsafe goods at an amount determined by the Authority.  

Following the voluntary product recall by industry, the Authority wishes to appeal to consumers to take precaution and return the said products to the stores where they were purchased from, with or without receipts.

Although industry information is that the defective cans do not pose any health hazard to consumers, the CCA awaits determination from the Health Authorities on the potential health hazard of the recalled products.
